A Birthday, A Move, and a Trip to the ER (Part II)

First, it was my husband's birthday.  Because we lived in two oddly empty houses on his birthday, I decided to pack up the kids, come to the new house, and dive in to cake-baking.  It looked a little like this:

Blowing out candles looked a little like this:

Then we moved, finally.  And it looked a little like this:

Check out the shirts, inspired by Cheri at Blog This Mom, won by Jenn and Juggling Life, and created by Trish at This is Trish's Blog.  It was a collaborative effort.

Then there was a little bit of this:

Although this time it wasn't at the beach, it was in our living room, and the landing didn't go over quite as well.  Let's just say, Patrick has never been so afraid in his life.  Tatum fell out of his arms on the landing, on her back, and her eyes rolled back.

I was called downstairs to the scene.  I asked Tatum where it hurt.  She pointed to her forehead.  Again, she fell on her back so I was a bit worried that her brain had done a bounce on her forehead.  She whimpered, but didn't cry much, which is almost harder.  But she didn't seem too badly hurt.  More shocked than anything, like her Daddy.

Then Tatum fell asleep.  Uh-huh.  About 5 minutes after the fall.  I know, I know.  We're not supposed to let them sleep after a head injury.  But it was extremely hot, it was around 2:00, and she may just have been truly tired.  She slept on the couch while we watched her breathe.

Then she woke up.  And vomited.  And vomited.  And vomited a third time.  She wasn't saying much more than a mumbled word here and there.

So Gran rushed over to take Chase, and we went to the ER.

Tatum vomited on the drive over as well.

We got in.  It took over an hour to be seen.  But in that hour, our tiny little girl became much more like herself.  She sang.  She spelled words.  She went potty.  She smiled.  She talked on the phone.  We had a feeling things were going to be alright.

By the time we were seen, it had been about 4 and a half hours since the fall.  She was okay.
Here's a good lesson, besides not throwing your kids in the air anymore, (can I just tell you how utterly scared and terrible Patrick felt?), according to the ER doctor, if your child has a head injury and falls asleep and vomits, it's not necessarily reason enough to bring them in.  He said it was more important to go based on their behavior.  Are they acting abnormal, which in her case was yes.  I'm no doctor, so follow your own gut, but I had always thought falling asleep was a no-no, and then vomiting meant, holy crap, get the kid in NOW.  Tough call.  We called about 147 doctor and nurse friends and they all said, go to the ER.  Glad we did.  Even better, that she is just fine.

Ta-Da!  I'm okay!

And here they are, the next day looking, and acting as cute as ever.  Thank God.

That is truly scary. I'm not a panicker, but I would totally have gone to the E.R.

You are going to take a break from moving on Wednesday night, aren't you?!

Hooray for the move!!

HOLY CRAP about Tatum!

Whew!! So glad to hear that she is OK, and YES I would have gone to the ER too! :)

Hoping your next post is about something calm. But seriously the kids are just too cute! They even look like they are helping with the move. Lucky Mom! Hope that was real helping!

Happy Birthday and oh my! Paul has played like that with the kids so many times. Luckly no one has been dropped.

about the 'not falling asleep'. After a head injury the best thing you can do it sleep. When to worry is when they don't act like themselves and are nodding off when they shouldn't. The vomiting would have worried me though... that's odd. So glad she's okay.

Tell Patrick that I know just how he felt. I will never be rid of the enormously awful memory of burning my baby girl's head with boiling water. *shudder* Saddly, even after the doctor deemed her fine and gave me many reassurances that her hair would grow where she was burned, I still had to see it every day. That was a month of many guilt ladden tears.

I'm SO SO glad Tatum is ok.

Oh my...when you all do it up, you do it up good, don't you?!?!
I hope that Tatum AND especially Patrick have recovered...am thinking it may take him a lot longer!! But...sometimes a trip to the ER is just something you have to do.
And this may sound strange, but...may this day, with all its ups and downs (!) be the worst one.... you will have in your new house!

Love the last picture of Chase...he looks so different (yet still totally cutie!) without his glasses!!!

I am not sure what looks yummier?
The cake.
Your kids.
Or that fabulous looking kitchen.
I can't decide.

Happy birthday to Patrick!

So sorry about the drama and the trauma around little Tatum.
I would have done the same thing.
Falling. Sleeping. Vomiting.
Not a good combination.
I am glad she is doing okay now.
I think you deserve a day OFF today!

So glad that everything ended up okay. Could she be any cuter posing it up? I mean, really!

Good heavens! So glad she's alright - I would have taken her in as well.

Poor Patrick.

Ack, I'm glad she's ok. I've always heard not to let them fall asleep too but realisitcally, it's the body's best means of healing. Perhaps it's so they don't vomit while sleeping? Anyway, I'm glad that all turned out well in the end. Poor Dad.. he must have felt so bad.

If it weren't for knowing the outcome after that photograph, I'd say how it was such a perfectly beautiful shot... because it really was.

Thanks for your visit to my blog. :)

We have similar minds, I set up the kids' bedrooms and unpacked the wine glasses (we just moved too). Us girls have to stick together!

Good GOlly Miss Molly, that must've scared all of you to pieces. I would've gone to the er, too (seems to be the consensus here...) those shirts (and those kids!) are way toooo adorable. Great cake - you must have patience to bake with 2 3YO. Go momma!

I am so glad she's okay - I would have freaked out! When my husband used to do that, I just had to turn away because I knew I'd have a heart attack if I watched . . . but it's a totally normal little kid thing, I am just a big baby! :)
